Desensitized
I just came across an article from last year about a woman who'd gotten her head stuck in the closing doors of a subway train in the Bronx. Someone videotaped it with their cellphone from another train instead of walking over to help her, and many people walked by her pretending not to notice. While the article might be outdated, the story isn't.
I've lived here in NYC for almost five years now, and I recognize that attitude. When you ask about it, you usually get a response to the effect of, "people are in their own heads", or "it's so busy up here"... blah, blah, blah. I can see right through that horse shit, and I don't believe for a hot second that nobody notices things like that. I also know all you have to do is go stick your hands between the doors and start pushing them apart. They usually open. Hell, at least stand beside her until help arrives if you're too nadless to make an effort. The degree of desensitization in our society infuriates me. I can literally feel the fire in my system. I know you can usually force open the doors of a subway train by pushing on them. I've done it.
I choose to believe that there are still unrobotic humans out there, however. I'm fortunate to know some of those people personally. I will always gravitate towards those who aren't afraid to show a little bit if humanity and courage in a world where compassion seems to be a little lost. They stand out and shine brighter than the blinding reflection on the snow on a cold winter morning. We're losing them. We're losing the good ones.
