Girls and Metal
Metalhead girls love the music, but I know we all listen to it differently. It's more of an entire soul heavy experience instead of a primary focus on riffs or beats. We've always been incredibly selective in everything we want, and metal music is no exception. Like I mention in the book, you basically have to line up the planets to turn us on. We need an entire picture, and not just its segments, in order to experience a fuller kind of satisfaction from music and from life.
I'm really excited to talk about all this from a woman's perspective. It took letting go of my ego a little bit, as some of this is very personal. We tend to hide things; it's easier. But I know I share a commonality in it with many others out there. What's really going to take courage is letting it go public and being prepared to relax in any humiliation I might feel as my most intimate thoughts and secrets get passed around. One of the reasons I did this was to make sure any other women out there who have burned through any of these experiences or judgments have someone to identify with.
The eighties was a decade full of decadence. We were all a little crazy and impulsive. The genX nation is quieter now, but some of us still value that deep and dark sound. My entire life was built on this music, and it will never leave me. It's burned its neuron pathways into my brain. While I'm a lot calmer and more self-disciplined, I do still like some good thrash with my pizza. I can't wait to share this story with all of you!
