Burning Things
Fire has always been attractive, yes? I love burning things as much as anyone else. Bonfires, outdoor ovens and cooking, beach fires in a barrel, fireplaces..
There's this trend that's been going around for awhile now of burning bay leaves for stress relief. They do it in yoga studios and at home, and even for a 10 minute spiritual retreat when the mood strikes. The idea is that the chemical in it called linalool will relieve anxiety when inhaled. Maybe it will for some. I like burning it, simply because I like the smell of burning herbs and wood and things. I don't believe it will relieve any anxiety, though. I think some people are getting confused as to the fact that it can cause drowsiness and dizziness. I'm sure if you're drowsy and dizzy, you might think your anxiety is being relieved. Some are allergic to it, so be careful.
It's also in plants like lavender, cinnamon and cannabis. It's supposed to smell good. It's been used in pest control for roaches and fleas and fruit flies. It's been used in soaps and cosmetics. It's everywhere, but I guess you can also just burn some bay leaves. I'm guessing this is more legal than burning weed in the yoga studio to relax people.
Continuing with my fire kick..
I was fortunate enough to witness a lightning strike hit and burn down an old, black barn once out in the country. It was beautiful. (There was nothing inside) I watched it from my bedroom window one night as we were having a thunderstorm. I was around 12 at the time, I think. I remember being so captivated that I didn't run and tell anyone right away. I watched it burn for about a minute before I went down the old rickety stairs and woke up my mother. The entire neighborhood rushed over to put it out, but the thing burned to the ground anyway.
I equate our spirits with the sparks of a large fire, being able to move in and out of the flames at will. We're like a giant sea of fire energy, and we can flow along together or jump off every now and then to go on an adventure. I wrote about a near death experience in the book about this, so I won't go into too much detail here. And with that said..
I swear I don't go around burning down things or not reporting fires. The barn happened to be sitting alone in the country, far enough away from houses and trees to not pose a problem. There was nothing in it, it was midnight in a small town, and a long time ago. Everyone was in bed. I promise I call the fire department whenever I see one these days. I like to watch the firemen. ;)
I hope all of you take this Wednesday and make it magic in some small way for someone. Any ounce of compassion is tremendous in such a big world.
